A collaborative response to opioid addiction and overdose in Grey Bruce

In 2016, the Community Drug and Alcohol Strategy created a multi-sectoral working group to investigate local trends related to opioid addiction and overdose.

The group, chaired by Grey Bruce Public Health, developed the first-of-its-kind opioid overdose alert system. The system leverages existing reporting channels between paramedic services and public health units (the e-notification system). When paramedics code an opioid event, the information is automatically flagged and sent directly to Grey Bruce Public Health (GBPH) in real-time.

This allows GBPH to issue public safely alerts and coordinate a multi-progued response to potentially life-threatening opioid events.
